"The rain will fall as sleet for a time in places also, with snow possible on high ground. Mild at first with highs of 8 or 9 Celsius in strong and gusty south to southeast winds. "

Winds will veer northwest around midday, ease and it will become much colder for the afternoon.

Through the afternoon and evening brighter weather will follow from the west and winds will ease.

Thursday is then "likely to be one of the brighter days this week," with most areas seeing dry and sunny spells, but there will still be a chance of strong southerly winds developing later while highest temperatures are due to range from 7 to 9 or 10 degrees.

The last of the overnight rain will clear from the east early in the morning on Friday to leave a day of sunny spells and showers.

The showers will be heavy or thundery with the possibility of hail, but temperatures will remain mild between 9 and 12 degrees, in light to moderate southerly breezes.

A full forecast for the weekend ahead has yet to be confirmed, with forecasters saying: “Continuing very unsettled with further wet and windy spells expected.”
