Mercedes Has Plans For Another EV. This Time, With Over 1,000 HP

The Breakdown

  • Mercedes-AMG is developing an electric SUV with over 1,000 horsepower.
  • A coupe version of the SUV will also be offered.
  • SUVs make up more than half of the automaker's global volume.

Mercedes-AMG remains committed to EVs and SUVs. That's no shock considering SUVs account for more than half of the automaker's global sales volume.

The good news here, for AMG fans, is that the automaker understands that an electric SUV needs serious power. According to Autocar, the upcoming AMG EV SUV should deliver output in the four-figure range.

Mercedes-AMG has already been seen testing its own bespoke EV SUV. This upcoming model will ride on the AMG.EA platform, created specifically for high-performance AMG-bred EVs.

This newest addition won't simply be a regular SUV, either. AMG plans to add a coupe-shaped version as well. That's not a huge surprise, considering the multiple body styles for SUVs sprinkled throughout the Mercedes lineup.

Rumor has it that the upcoming AMG SUVs will feature a powertrain layout similar to the one Mercedes showcased in its GT XX Concept. This means a tri-motor setup, cylindrical battery cells with direct cooling, and an 800-volt architecture for fast charging.

The GT XX Concept produces 1,340 hp. We'd be surprised to see the same amount for the AMG SUV. But who knows? Perhaps the team in Afalterbach is eager to put a stamp on its own SUV project.

We'll all find out when the wraps are pulled off this pending project sometime in 2027.

Motor1's Take: If Mercedes-Benz sells mostly SUVs these days, then it makes sense to let AMG develop a few of its own. The German automaker touts ever-impressive range and power figures, which will translate into a seriously capable machine when it's finally ready to enter production.

Despite noise to the contrary, electric vehicles aren't going anywhere. And if Mercedes-AMG sees a market for high-horsepower, high-dollar SUVs, there will only be more of them to come.
