This is now, officially, on the list for the day my lottery numbers come up. I really enjoyed living with the electric G-Wagen for ten days, partly because it doesn’t behave like a generic electric SUV wearing a famous badge. It still feels like a G-Class, complete with huge doors, exposed hinges, upright glass and a shape that could have been drawn with a ruler. It just happens to be all electric.
The G-Class story started in 1979 and Mercedes hasn’t tried to disguise the family history. The G580 keeps plenty of the old-school charm intact: the ladder-frame construction, independent front suspension, a rigid De Dion rear axle and selectable low range gearing.
