Memorial appeal for much-loved Cumbernauld gran who worked as a lollipop lady for 23 years

A memorial appeal has been launched to give a Cumbernauld mum who worked as a lollipop lady for 23 years the perfect send-off.

Jacqueline 'Jackie' Shiels battled lung cancer for 16 months before tragically passing away on February 22 surrounded by her family.

She is survived by daughters Sharlene, 33, and Ashleigh 30, and her grandchildren Kyle 12, Isabella, 9, and Hollie, 6.

Sharlene launched a fundraising appeal on GoFundMe in the wake of her mum's passing. In it she penned an emotional tribute to her mum, who she says was "loved by the whole Westfield community and beyond".

She added: "She worked as a lollypop lady for 23 years and knew every single child’s name and always remembered them all the way from primary one to beyond high school. She loved her job and even when she was sick she just wanted to go back to work to see the children and have a have a chat and gossip with all the mums dads carers and anyone who would cross her path".

Sharlene also said that due to covid the family "didn’t get the chance to do everything we wanted", and as a result are asking for donations to give mum Jackie "the send-off she deserves".

She finished the appeal by saying that the family "have lost our best friend and our lives will never be the same. Thank you to anyone that can help us".

Over £2,000 has been raised for Jackie's send-off (as of February 22) from an initial target of £500.
