Members of public hold down man who ‘attacked woman with broken bottle’ in Bermondsey

Members of the public held down a man suspected of attacking a woman with a broken bottle and threatening a child in a south London market.

The woman, in her 20s, was rushed to hospital after the alleged attack in The Blue Market square in Bermondsey at 6.50pm on Wednesday.

The child was allegedly threatened by the bottle-wielding man but was uninjured.

Footage from the scene appears to show brave bystanders holding down a suspect stopping traffic in the middle of Southwark Park Road.

Some aim kicks at the man as he is pinned to the floor.

He was taken to hospital and arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called after a man was alleged to have attacked a woman with a broken bottle and threatened a child.

“Officers responded immediately and arrested a man, aged in his 20s, who had been detained by members of the public.

“The woman, aged in her 20s, was taken to hospital. Her injuries are not life-threatening. The child did not sustain any physical injuries.”

“An investigation to establish what happened is now ongoing.”
