The University of Melbourne has appointed Glyn Davis as interim vice chancellor, replacing Emma Johnston who died last year.

Professor Davis, who served as vice chancellor from 2005-2018, will start on February 2 while a search takes place for a permanent replacement, the university says.

Professor Johnston, who became the first female to lead the university in February 2025, died from cancer less than a year later, without being able to implement her vision for the university, known as Strategy 2030.

According to the university, the strategy is based around three pillars - exceptional education, transformational research and "building strong and diverse connections".

University of Melbourne Chancellor Jane Hansen said Prof Davis would provide leadership, stability and confidence until a new vice chancellor was found.

"Professor Davis, with his unique knowledge and experience of the University of Melbourne, and broader higher education sector, is perfectly placed to lead the university into semester one," Ms Hansen said.

A former Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and chair of Opera Australia, Prof Davis pledged to "honour the legacy" of professor Johnston.

"I am humbled to be invited and appreciate the importance of continuity and stability at a challenging moment," he said.
