Mel C reveals her regret over her tattoos and the subtle warning that Madonna gave her

Mel C has revealed she regrets some of the tattoos that she got when she was younger and shared that Madonna once subtly warned her about going under the needle.

The singer-songwriter, 48, has sported a variety of different tattoos throughout her music career, including during the height of the Spice Girls ' fame in the mid to late 1990s.

She has around 11 tattoos including a Celtic circlet around her bicep, a phoenix, a feather, a lotus flower, a dragon and a Celtic cross.

The Brit Award winner - who has previously expressed an interest in having some of her tattoos removed - has now shared her thoughts on the inkings she got in her youth.

Discussing the tattoos in a recent interview, Mel C - also known as Sporty Spice - commented: "I go through phases. I have periods when I just wish my tattoos weren't there."

The Daily Mail reports that she said the artwork and designs are quite old-fashioned now so they end up carbon dating the Never Be the Same Again singer to the 1990s.

Mel told the outlet that she was warned about the permanency of tattoos though during a dinner that she had with Madonna more than two decades ago.

Mel asked Madonna why she didn't have any tattoos, to which the Like a Prayer singer said they're "too permanent," according to the outlet - which added that it's only now, decades too late, that Mel appreciates such wisdom.

Madonna has since got her first tattoo, which is a tribute to her six children as it's their initials on her wrist. She revealed she'd got "inked for the very first time" in 2020.

The Grammy Award winner seems to have changed her mind about tattoos - and is happy with the permanency of hers' - as she has since got a couple of other inkings too.

During her recent interview, Mel explained that whilst she wouldn't be keen for her daughter Scarlett, 13, to get a tattoo in the future, she isn't in the best position over the issue.

The singer - whose autobiography Who I Am will be released next week - teased that, at least at the moment, Scarlett "pretends not to listen" to advice she's given by her mother.

And Mel further commented about tattoo advice: "But on this? Well, I haven't got a leg to stand on, have I?" She teasingly added: "No, I haven't gotten a tattooed leg to stand on."
