Meet William LeFaivre, the young inventor who designed a sensor system to help skiers detect their alignment, earned a U.S. patent and then began developing medical-support technology

Many inventions begin with a simple observation: something is not working as it should, and there may be a better way to solve the problem. For young inventors, everyday experiences can provide the inspiration to experiment, test ideas, and develop practical solutions.

William LeFaivre is one of those young inventors. His experience learning to ski led him to develop a technology designed to help skiers understand whether their skis were properly aligned. The idea eventually became Ski Sense, a sensor-based system that earned a U.S. patent.
