After nearly a decade of federal departments and agencies routinely failing to meet mandatory cyber security standards, the federal government will scrap its foundational Essential Eight framework in favour of a new principles-based standard.
Cyber Security Minister Tony Burke announced the new ASD Essentials, developed by the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD).
It will phase out the numerical maturity ratings of the previous framework, which revealed that nearly four in five government agencies, including Parliament House, were operating below required cyber security standards.
