Meet Kimi Antonelli, the Italian racing prodigy who progressed from karting as a child to Formula 1 and became one of the youngest drivers ever to compete at the sport's highest level

Meet Kimi Antonelli, the Italian racing prodigy whose extraordinary journey from childhood karting to Formula 1 has quickly become one of motorsport’s most compelling modern stories. Born Andrea Kimi Antonelli in Bologna, Italy, on August 25, 2006, he entered the world of racing at an exceptionally young age and began karting when he was just seven. His progress was rapid, but it was his combination of speed, consistency and championship-winning performances that eventually attracted the attention of Mercedes. By the time Antonelli reached Formula 1, he had already established himself as one of the most closely watched young talents in international motorsport. His rise illustrates how a driver can move through the racing ladder with remarkable speed when natural ability is matched by structured development, competition and preparation.

Antonelli’s early karting career provided the foundation for everything that followed. Racing for his father Marco Antonelli’s team, the young Italian accumulated victories and titles before reaching his teenage years. Mercedes subsequently identified him as a potential future star and brought him into its junior programme in 2019. That same year, Antonelli won both the WSK Euro Series and WSK Super Master Series in the OK Junior category, while also finishing runner-up in the FIA European Karting Championship.
