MEERUT: A mahila thana SHO and a female constable were suspended on Sunday for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from the kin of an Army jawan, in order to remove his name from a dowry FIR lodged by their daughter-in-law. The family recorded the bribe demand on their phone and shared the video with SSP of Meerut, who ordered a probe into the matter and later issued suspension orders based on an interim report submitted by SP (rural).
According to police, a woman who was married into a family in Kankarkhera had lodged an FIR accusing her in-laws, husband and other family members of harassment over dowry. “The brother-in-law of the woman is an Army jawan and is currently posted in Nagaland. As the dowry FIR would affect his career, his wife and uncles requested the SHO to remove his name citing reasons such as the FIR was lodged as revenge and that the jawan hardly ever comes home,” said a police officer involved in the investigation.
