Medics have issued a warning that "the world is not prepared" for a highly contagious fungal disease as the first two known cases were confirmed. Two women in the USA, aged 28 and 47, have been confirmed as having the drug-resistant ringworm, also known as tinea.
The country's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the news. The patients suffered lesions on their neck, buttocks, thighs and abdomen - with family members also suffering symptoms.
David Denning, Professor of Infectious Diseases in Global Health at the University of Manchester, revealed the infection, which can be transmitted easily in schools and homes, is spreading across countries.
