Medical test of rape survivors: Delhi Commission for Women issues notice over delay

NEW DELHI: Delhi Commission for Women has issued a notice to Delhi government’s health department over long delays in conducting medical examination of rape survivors. The commission observed that some hospitals made rape survivors wait for eight to 15 hours for a medical examination. On an average, a rape survivor is made to wait for hours for her medical examination in the hospitals in the national capital.

Taking suo moto cognisance in the matter, the commission has also sought details of the process followed by the hospitals to ensure priority to the survivors of rape, standard timelines in which the examination must happen and the action taken against officers if the medical examination is not conducted within the desired time frame. In its notice, the commission has stated that in case the SOPs have not been drafted in this regard by the health department, the same must be formulated urgently.
