Maya Jama break-up was 'like actual death' says Stormzy

Stormzy has spoken about his relationship with presenter Maya Jama, who was earlier this month announced as the new host of ITV2 reality TV show Love Island. In an interview with Louis Theroux, Stormzy has compared losing his ex-girlfriend Maya Jama to "actual death.”

In Louis' latest series he follows the lives of famous figures and one of the episodes takes a deep dive into Stormzy’s life and career. The rapper reminisced on the successes in his career but explained his break-up in 2020 led him to remove himself from social media.

Louis explained to viewers that Stormzy's relationship with Bristol-born Maya broke down and Theroux proceeded to ask the rapper about their break-up, reports the Daily Star.

Stomzy said: "My break-up, that was probably the biggest catalyst for growth as a man. I was like: 'Ok, you've made a mistake, and you [lost] someone you love, someone you cared for, someone that is special to you.

“That's probably the biggest loss a man can have. Away from someone passing away, away from actual death, that's the biggest loss you can have."

Fans took to Twitter to debate whether he still has feelings for the TV presenter. One wrote: "Stormzy still loves Maya," with a grimacing face.

Another wrote: "The saddest thing is that Stormzy still loves Maya."

Throughout the documentary Stormzy spoke about his family and relationship with his father, which he said he was still working on. Talking about new music with Louis, Stormzy admitted that he would brand his newest album as a "soul" album - "not necessarily soul music," but music "from his soul.”
