Under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation, in collaboration with B.Grimm and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, is thrilled to present the most exciting of concerts on Monday 12th December at 7:30 pm in the Main Hall of the Thailand Cultural Centre. Russian virtuoso Maxim Vengerov – regarded by many as the greatest living violinist – is visiting the Kingdom of Thailand to perform Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major Op. 19 and Ravel's Tzigane for Violin and Orchestra with the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of English conductor Douglas Bostock.
Mussorgsky's tone poem and audience favourite Night on a Bald Mountain will open the concert, and brilliant Russian pianist Roustem Saïtkoulov will perform the most famous and celebrated of Prokofiev's piano concertos – No. 3 in C major Op. 26. To have not just one but two stellar soloists share the platform with them at the TCC will be an honour of the highest order for the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra – a truly historic occasion for classical music in Thailand.
Vengerov has been amongst the very cream of modern violin soloists for some four decades. Born in 1974 in Novosibirsk, Siberia, he came to early attention aged ten, winning the 1984 International Karol Lipiński and Henryk Wieniawski Young Violin Player competitions. A leading pupil of legendary music pedagogue Zakhar Bron, in 1990 he won the International Carl Flesch Competition in London, leading to a fruitful recording contract with Teldec and the launch of his international career. In 1997 Vengerov became the first classical musician to be appointed an International Goodwill Ambassador by UNICEF, performing for children in Uganda, Kosovo and also here in Thailand. He currently performs on a late Stradivarius period 1727 “ex-Kreutzer” violin.
Roustem Saïtkoulov is a Franco-Russian pianist born in 1971 in Kazan, Soviet Union, and a regular recital partner with Vengerov. After training at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and the Musikhochschule in Munich, which awarded him the Meisterclassendiplom, he became a prize-winner at numerous international competitions, including the Grand Prix of the Monte Carlo World Piano-Masters, the Ferruccio Busoni Competition (Bolzano, Italy), and First Prize in the Rome Piano Competition.
Douglas Bostock is Principal Conductor of the Aargau Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Czech Chamber Orchestra, and has conducted RBSO concerts of exceptional quality in recent seasons. This concert without a doubt promises to be the standout, not-to-be-missed highlight of the whole year for the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and its loyal audience – a perfect conclusion to a very active and successful year in the ensemble's development.
