Mauricio Pochettino has already given Chelsea and Christian Pulisic transfer verdict

Chelsea appear to be closing in on appointing their third permanent manager in ten months. Mauricio Pochettino could be the fifth manager to take charge, including temporary personnel, in around 14 months if he is to stand in the Stamford Bridge dugout come the start of the 2023/24 season.

For players such as Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz or Hakim Ziyech - who joined in 2020 - this may well be their sixth boss since joining and that's only if they aren't shifted on beforehand. This is the history of Chelsea Football Club, Giorgio Chilellini might say.

Not many sign up for a smooth ride when they join Chelsea and few have found that out more than Christian Pulisic. The American was signed whilst Maurizio Sarri was in charge. Although he never played for the Italian he is the seventh man to be in charge since Pulisic agreed to be part of the journey.

Four years on and he might not get the chance to play under Pochettino, if he does then it will be full swing from May 2018, a time in which the Argentine wanted to sign the exciting winger for Tottenham.

It has felt like a new manager coming in to Stamford Bridge would be the best chance for Pulisic to ressurect his faltering time at Chelsea. Frank Lampard got the best out of him but only for a short period of time, he was, alongside his teammates, almost non-existent in the second half of the Englishman's first spell.

Thomas Tuchel was the next man destined to advance his performance level. That never truly got started though as he was shunted to wing-back and other unnatural roles. Graham Potter's arrival meant very little changed. He still got deployed in hybrid defensive roles.

Neither Bruno Saltor or Lampard in interim charge have found much use for him either. If Pochettino is the man in charge next season will anything actually change? It already appears unlikely that Pulisic will make it through the summer without a transfer away but Pochettino has become well know for his ability to get the best out of players.

He even made reference to Pulisic joining in 2019 when he said: "A club like Chelsea can spend big money on a transfer and then send him on loan – do you think Tottenham can do this? No.

"But in the last few years Tottenham is fighting with this type of club. That is why no-one likes Tottenham much, that is why everyone wants to challenge us."

The 51 year-old was consistently battling with lesser funds than the top dogs, which is why the £54m deal to take him to SW6 was simple for the Blues but near impossible for Tottenham. The same cannot be said for him since then. Pochettino was afforded the wealth of Paris Saint-Germain in his last job and will be backed by Todd Boehy and Clearlake Capital at Chelsea too.

It remains an if at this point, but Chelsea have already been shown that Pochettino likes Pulisic and it could save them some money on a replacement if he was to take a fancy in the 24-year-old once again. If not, it will just be another what-if for Pulisic at Chelsea and the start of a big clearout for Pochettino if things get across the line.
