Matt O'Riley injury update provided by Brighton chief

Brighton's owner has provided an injury update on former Celtic star Matt O'Riley.

The Denmark international was crocked just eight minutes into his debut for the Premier League club in an EFL Cup clash against Crawley Town last midweek.

He was on the receiving end of an awful tackle by Jay Williams around the halfway line.

The 23-year-old was just moments into his first appearance for the Seagulls after he pocketed Celtic the largest sale in their history in a £25m move.

After getting medical attention, O'Riley was helped off the pitch. Boss Fabian Hurzeler said post-match: “I can't say how long he will be out but it’s a serious injury as we expected."

Now, according to Sky Sports News, the attacking midfielder will spend between eight to 12 weeks on the sidelines as he recovers from surgery.

Tony Bloom said: "We are hugely disappointed with that horror challenge on Matt O’Riley.

"He had his operation this week and that has been successful. We are all really looking forward to seeing him back at the later part of the year.

"It's really important to bring the right players with the right personality.

"From what I have seen and from what I have heard, everyone is fitting in well."

Meanwhile, Chris Sutton couldn't resist poking fun at former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson after the loss to Celtic on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers' side moved five points clear of their Glasgow rivals after the comfortable 3-0 victory.

Ferguson was at Celtic Park in the director's box to witness the derby disaster for his former club.

And he has admitted his trip to watch the match was hellish as Celtic supporters joined in a huddle celebration and were"laughing in his face".
