Masters 2022: Padraig Harrington's career from breaking Tiger dominance to Ryder Cup heartbreak

Padraig Harrington is set to tee off at the Masters 2022 in Augusta, Georgia on Thursday in a field with three other Irish players, Rory Mcilroy, Shane Lowry and Seamus Power.

The Rathfarnham native has never won The Masters with his best finish being tied for 5th in 2002 and 2008.

However it's still been a record-breaking career for Padraig Harrington both on the PGA and European Tour.

To this day Padraig Harrington is still the most successful golfer from the Republic with three major championship wins.

Harrington was the European player that broke Tiger Woods dominance in majors as well as being the first European to win consecutive major championships.

What makes this all the more remarkable is that Harrington's three majors happened within 13 months of each other.

In 2007, Harrington beat Sergio Garcia in a playoff to win The Open Championship at Carnoustie.

The following July, despite suffering a wrist injury before The Open, Harrington successfully defended his title at Royal Birkdale.

Just one month later in August 2008, Harrington became the first Irish golfer to win a major on American soil and the first European since Nick Faldo, when he won the 2008 USPGA championship.

Harrington has won four titles on the PGA Tour including two Honda Classics and a Barclays Classic.

It's the European tour where Harrington had most of his success with 15 wins.

For many Irish people, Harrington's most significant European victory came in 2007 when he finally won the Irish Open by beating Bradley Dredge in a playoff.

Harrington also made a significant contribution to the Ryder Cup, appearing in six and being captain at the Covid-interrupted 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

Unfortunately for Captain Harrington, the American team dominated defeating Europe 19-9 which is the largest margin of victory in the modern history of the event.

After the disappointment of the Ryder cup, Harrington will no doubt be very motivated to give a strong performance at the Masters this weekend.
