Massive blaze rips through former care home as people warned to keep windows closed

Fire crews battled a massive fire in a former care home building as neighbours were warned to stay away from the flames.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in Bolnore Farm Lane near Haywards Heath, West Sussex, at around 7pm.

Incredible photos showed the large building, which was empty, well alight as fire crews battled the large flames.

Ten fire engines attended the scene at its height while people were told to keep windows shut owing to the heavy smoke.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “We are currently tackling a fire in . “Local residents are advised to keep their windows closed due to heavy smoke.

“Ten engines are currently in attendance. We were called at 7.08pm to the fire in a former care home building.

“The B2272 in Haywards Heath has been closed both ways, from the Harvester to the Cuckfield bypass.

“Please continue to avoid the area and keep windows closed, thank you.”

They later added: “We have now scaled back our attendance to 7 engines, one aerial ladder platform and a water carrier.

“But it remains a fire of significant size.”

It comes as thousands of people were attending bonfire events throughout the UK, despite the foul weather experienced by most of the country.
