US Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey on Monday signed a new law easing restrictions on abortions after 24 weeks of pregnancy, giving physicians greater discretion over whether such procedures can be performed.
The legislation, passed by the state legislature in a fast-tracked process late last month, replaces Massachusetts' existing legal framework for abortions at or beyond 24 weeks. The new law says that "an abortion may be performed by a physician based upon the professional judgment of the physician."
