A 4v4 fighting game from Arc System Works can seem intimidating, especially for players who are new to the genre. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls combines four-character teams, assists, character switching and team-based combos.
The game launched on August 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC. It features a 20-character launch roster and several systems designed to make the game easier to approach, including simplified combos, one-button skills and assist attacks.
New players do not need to master every system immediately. Start with blocking, one Link Attack string and a single assist.
Choose an Easy Character
The character select screen includes an EASE OF USE rating. Characters with more stars are generally easier to learn.
Arc System Works recommends Captain America, Ms. Marvel and Wolverine as beginner-friendly choices. Iron Man and Spider-Man are also relatively accessible.
Storm and Danger are marked as more advanced characters and may require additional practice.
When building a team, players can combine close-range and long-range fighters. Wolverine can pressure opponents at close range, while Iron Man can support the team with ranged attacks. However, choosing a character you enjoy is the best place to begin.
Complete Startup Battle
Startup Battle teaches the game's core mechanics through a series of guided lessons. Players control Captain America while learning basic attacks, combos, skills and character-specific actions.
The mode is divided into two sections:
- Basics: Individual character actions
- Assemble: Team mechanics and cooperative attacks
Players familiar with fighting games can move directly to Assemble, while beginners should complete both sections.
The three primary attack buttons are:
- Light: □
- Medium: △
- Heavy: ○
Learn the Link Attack Strings
Link Attacks provide a simple way to perform useful combos. Repeatedly pressing the same attack button produces a complete attack sequence.
The three basic strings are:
- L → L → L → L: Chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break, causing a stage transition
- M → M → M: Leads into a powerful Super Skill
- H → H → H: Leads into an Ultimate Skill
These strings give new players a reliable offensive foundation. After becoming comfortable with them, players can begin practising longer routes such as:
L → M → H → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack
Learn to Block
Blocking is one of the most important defensive skills in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
- Standing Guard: Hold ←
- Crouching Guard: Hold ↙
The game also includes two defensive techniques that use □ + ×.
Assemble Counter: Press □ + × while not guarding. The character performs a defensive backstep and can automatically counterattack if the opponent strikes during the move.
Crossover: Press □ + × while guarding. A teammate enters the fight and interrupts the opponent, creating an opening.
Both techniques can be practised in Startup Battle.
Use Assists Before Switching Characters
Press × to call a teammate for an Assemble Assist attack. The direction held determines which teammate appears:
- Neutral or →: Second teammate
- ↓: Third teammate
- ←: Fourth teammate
For example, pressing ↓ + ×calls the third teammate.
New players should become comfortable with assists before learning manual character switching. Assists add team-based pressure without requiring players to control four characters at once.
Add Character Switching
Character switching uses a directional input and L2.
- ← + L2: Switches to the fourth teammate
After calling an assist, a brief "Switch?" prompt appears on screen. Press L2during the prompt to perform an assist-to-switch.
This technique allows the current character to recover while the assisting teammate continues the attack. The player can then switch directly into that teammate and maintain pressure.
Quick Skills and Command Inputs
Skills can be performed in two ways.
Quick Skills use a single button press and are easier for beginners.
Command Inputs use traditional fighting-game motion inputs. They deal slightly more damage and generate more Skill Gauge than Quick Skills.
New players should begin with Quick Skills and learn Command Inputs after becoming comfortable with movement, blocking and basic combos. The Quick Skill button can also be changed in the control settings.
Recommended Practice Order
- Standing and crouching blocks
- The L → L → L → L Link Attack
- One Quick Skill
- Assemble Assist
- Assist-to-switch
- Assemble Counter and Crossover
- Command Input Skills
- Longer combos using Assemble Rush
Try Episode Mode
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls also includes Episode Mode, a story campaign presented through motion comics and comic-style artwork.
It offers a lower-pressure way to practise movement, attacks and skills. Players do not need to learn all four characters immediately. One familiar fighter, reliable defense and one useful assist are enough to begin.
The game's full team choreography can be learned gradually. Start with the basic controls, then add assists, switching and longer combos as they become more comfortable.
