Martin Lewis puts head in hands as he urges people to claim cost of living payment

Martin Lewis has urged people to claim cost of living support.

The financial guru returned to front another edition of Money Show Live last night. The consumer champion tackled a number of issues impacting the housing market on a jam packed episode.

Martin dedicated the end of the show to three quick pieces of advice in the "News You Can Use" feature. Martin informed viewers the cost of living support for those who use alternative fuel such as heating oil and LPG gas should now be landing in accounts.

He said: "That long promised £200 energy support cost of living payment was started to be paid out yesterday and I'm told it should finish being paid out this month. It is automatically paid through your electricity supplier unless you're fully off grid and don't have electricity, in which case, you will need to apply later in February."

He added: "Those on pre-payment you'll get vouchers. They'll email you, they'll post it or they may text you about it so watch out for that."

The government announced a range of support measures last year to help households across the UK cope with skyrocketing energy bills. Most households across the UK were entitled to a £400 energy grant.

However, energy customers on non-smart prepayment meters needed to take action to claim their discount. Martin put his head in his hands as he revealed lots of "vulnerable" people have yet to come forward to claim the payment.

He said: "So many people haven't redeemed their vouchers on the £400 on pre pay. 20% of often the most vulnerable people haven't redeemed them and it's absolutely tragic for October and November. These are extra vouchers on top so watch out for that."
