Married couples who struggle to put enough money away for retirement are about to get a potentially valuable new incentive from Washington. Starting with 2027 contributions, the federal Saver’s Match could add as much as $2,000 to the retirement accounts of qualifying couples who file jointly and save enough themselves. Unlike the current Saver’s Credit, this benefit generally goes into retirement savings rather than simply reducing a household’s tax bill.
However, the headline number comes with income limits, contribution requirements and other rules families need to understand before counting on the money. For households that qualify, the federal Saver’s Match could effectively turn $4,000 of eligible contributions into as much as $6,000 earmarked for retirement.
