Marlins Pitcher Sandy Alcantara Completes First Shutout of MLB Season

Reigning National League Cy Young winner Sandy Alcántara was sensational on Tuesday night at LoanDepot Park, posting Major League Baseball’s first shutout of the 2023 season in just one hour and fifty-seven minutes.

Miami's ace rebounded from an opening day loss to the Mets with a superb 100 pitch effort against the previously undefeated Twins (4–1). The sub-two hour game was the shortest so far this season.

The 27-year old talent, who helped Miami earn their first win of the season, snapped the club’s four-game losing streak in the process. Alcántara went the distance scattering just three hits and one walk while striking out five in the team’s 1–0 win.

Since 2018, Alcántara has recorded the most complete game shutouts (4) of any pitcher in the majors.

Avisaíl García’s second-inning sole home run off Twins starter Kenta Maeda proved to be just enough for the Marlins club to win 1–0.

Despite coming up on the losing end, Twins management was thrilled to see Maeda perform well in his first outing since undergoing Tommy John surgery. After missing the entire 2022 season, Maeda struck out nine in five innings of work.
