Mark McGhee is backing moves to bring VAR into Scottish football.
The Dundee boss is a firm fan of the technology as all 42 SPFL clubs get set to vote on its possible introduction on April 19.
McGhee hopes the green light is given, with the former Aberdeen legend insisting the game is now so fast referees need all the help they can get.
The 64-year-old said: “There is still controversy around VAR but if it is used properly it is an advantage.
“Referees have a harder job than any of us. The game is fast, aggressive and hard to see sometimes from the sideline.
“It isn’t easy for referees so the more help they can get the better. And in the spirit of modernisation, if you have the ability to be more accurate in your decisions, you should use it. At the end of the day, you just have to concede that if a goal is an inch offside, then it’s offside.”
McGhee, meanwhile, insists the point relegation-haunted Dundee salvaged against Aberdeen at the weekend has helped him convince his players they can go one better this Saturday and beat neighbours Dundee United at Tannadice.
The Dark Blues twice came from behind against the Dons and the manager admits they will have to show the same sort of dogged defiance in the derby.
McGhee said: “It was disappointing to lose two goals on Saturday as we talk a lot about clean sheets.
“But we showed good determination and staying power to get the late equaliser, so there are a lot of good points that we can take into this game.
“It would have been very difficult for me if we had lost against Aberdeen to then come up with a rationale for the players as to why we can win at Tannadice.
“But the fact is the result against Aberdeen, and the way they got that result, does allow me to say to them we can go there and win.”
Dundee are still staring automatic relegation in the face with 11th-placed St Johnstone now six points ahead.
This weekend, Saints face a daunting trip to league leaders Celtic and, if they lose, Dundee could cut the gap to three points by beating United.
However, the Dundee boss admitted his players need to focus on taking care of business at Tannadice rather than thinking about piling pressure on St Johnstone.
McGhee said: “On Saturday when we got the equaliser with five minutes to go, we knew that St Johnstone were winning and I was calculating all the time in my head the risk/reward thing.
“We could have thrown everything at it and put Niall McGinn on and taken off a more defensive player to try
to get a win.
“But equally we might have been countered and lost 3-2 .
“A three-game swing would have been required but at the moment it is only really a two-game one as long as we beat St Johnstone when we eventually play them.”
