Mark Fotheringham in Felix Magath reunion as former Celtic midfielder takes assistant role at Hertha Berlin

Former Celtic and St Mirren midfielder Mark Fotheringham will be assistant manager at Hertha Berlin, having been chosen for a reunion with Felix Magath.

The 38-year-old played under the legendary German coach at Fulham, and had a spell at Freiburg in his playing career.

Since hanging up his boots Fotheringham has worked with Tomas Oral at both Karlruhrer and Ingolstadt, with a brief spell as player-assistant manager at Cowdenbeath.

Hertha are marooned in the relegation zone with no wins since December, and after a fifth loss in a row have turned to Magath to try and save their season.

The veteran coach has won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg, as well as scoring the winning goal against Juventus for Hamburg in the 1983 European Cup final.

Magath was officially unveiled as the new Hertha boss on Monday and announced that Fotheringham will be joining him.

He said: "An assistant is coming in today.

"When making the selection, it was important to me that, unlike me, I had a man at my side who was a bit younger and was a little closer to the age the players are.

"It will be Mark Fotheringham, I worked with him at Fulham and he was also an assistant and Ingolstadt and speaks perfect German."

The Scot had been approached about being assistant to Neil Lennon at Omonia Nicosia but terms could not be agreed.
