This is not a drill: Margot Robbie’s The Sims movie is officially happening!!!!
Video game company Electronic Arts just confirmed the project has been green-lit. It’s being produced by Robbie’s production company LuckyChap and directed by Loki’s Kate Herron.
EA’s Vice President Kate Gorman also spilled some goss about what the movie will be about, saying it has the potential to be as big as Barbie. I will be seated!
“We have been wanting to get this right. We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie is exactly what we want. And we know there’s so much love and nostalgia, probably beyond what we would even realise, for The Sims and so many people like us have played throughout generations,” she told Variety.
“So we want this to be an experience that reflects all that amazing history and play of so many people in this world, but also is something that you can share across generations and to be part of pop culture and culturally relevant.”
If you’re wondering exactly what Sims storylines could be included, it sounds like we’ll FINALLY get answers about what happened to Bella Goth.
For those who have been living under a rock, Bella Goth is one of *the* most iconic characters in The Sims. After her first appearance as one of the neighbourhood playable residents in the original Sims game, Bella Goth appeared in The Sims 2 with no memories, a fresh look, and an entirely different personality. Was she cloned? Was she abducted by aliens? It’s a mystery that’s left Sims fans wondering for decades (no, literally).
Gorman said the movie will contain “a lot of lore” and will give us an “authentic Sims experience”. I’m reading between the lines here and I’m convinced this is a hint about Miss Bella Goth.
“You will see a lot of The Sims universe come to life and you will see a lot of the classic experiences that our players have in the games come to life in the movie,” she revealed.
“There will be Freezer Bunnies… I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalised any of those details. But that’s the idea, is to say that it lives within this space. It’s a nod to all the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within The Sims.”
Some Sims fans have been campaigning on social media for the entire film to be made in Simlish, with English subtitles laid over. Honestly? Genius. The Oscar for Best Foreign Film would be in the bag!
Gorman said she’s seen the Simlish discourse, and said the producers will entertain the idea of a movie in Simlish.
“It’s fun. It’s a great idea, and it’s something we’ll definitely talk about,” she said.
Will we also see a mum ignoring her baby while it’s on fire? Sounds like the perfect start for a Sims horror movie.
