Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling send fans wild in first trailer for the Barbie movie

The first trailer for the upcoming Barbie movie has arrived.

In the teaser shared this morning [December 16], movie fans get a glimpse of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling bringing dolls Ken and Barbie to life on the big screen.

Barbie, directed by Oscar-nominated Greta Gerwig, will see Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot star as the titular character in the movie based on the eponymous toyline by Mattel

Australian actress Margot can be seen as Barbie in a black and white swimsuit on a beach during the short snippet, with Ryan's Ken later popping up in a black top and headband.

The trailer also gives fans waiting to see the hot new film at the cinemas a glimpse into Barbie's fantastic plastic world, with the pink town shown in the preview reminiscent of the Barbie brand's toys throughout the 1990s.

Not much else is given away in the trailer but that hasn't stopped fans going wild on social media.

"WE WILL BE WATCHING," one Twitter user reacted as the preview was shared on social media.

"Bout to see this at least 8 times in theater I KNOW THAT’S RIGHT," another added, as a third wrote: "STOP THIS IS SO COOL."

Narrated by Helen Mirren, done in the style of the iconic 2001: A Space Odyssey, the trailer explains how Barbie changed the landscape for toys when children played mostly with baby dolls beforehand.

The clip see’s a smiling Margot, sporting a black and white striped swimming costume, red lipstick and gold hoop earrings, slowly sliding her white sunglasses down her nose and winking at the camera as the young girls smash up their baby dolls and throw them into the air.

The trailer immediately transitions to bright pink and blue scenes with Robbie overlooking the neighbourhood and waving waving from the Barbie Dreamhouse.

It also features Ryan wearing a black fringed ensemble outfit as Ken surrounded by a group of friends wearing sports gear, seemingly playing Lacrosse.

The teaser for the highly-anticipated featured premiered on Thursday night during a sneak preview screenings of Avatar: The Way of Water.

It follows images of Margot and Ryan as Ken and Barbie almost breaking the internet earlier this year.

Sporting bright blond and flashing his abs in a denim vest - no shirt - Canadian star Ryan looked unrecognisable after being transformed into his character Ken for a promo picture released in June.

In the now-viral snap, Ryan, 41, cooly leans on a bright pink pole and flashes a cheeky smile as he poses in a pair of jeans with underwear with his character's name visible above the waistline.

Just like the doll, the Blue Valentine actor appears hairless with a rock-hard six pack as he brings the children's toy to life for the upcoming romantic comedy.

When asked by PEOPLE magazine what it was like to 'break the internet' earlier this year, Ken actor Ryan joking replied: "Well, the internet has been trying to break me for years. It gave me no other choice."

He added: "We've been having so much fun making this movie and it felt nice to see everyone else start having as much fun as we are. I can't wait for the film to come out and for that to continue."

Margot has promised to give fans 'something different' (Warner Bros)

Barbie, scheduled to released in July 2023, will also see big names like Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon and Michael Cera all make appearances.

After her casting was confirmed in July 2019, Barbie actress Margot went on to discuss how the film's goal is to subvert expectations

"We like the things that feel a little left of centre. Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,' but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you're thinking, we're going to give you something totally different'," the actress explained to The Hollywood reporter.

'We're really firing on all cylinders,' Margot said of the Barbie movie earlier this year (Warner Bros)

"The thing you didn't know you wanted. Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we're really firing on all cylinders."

Director Greta recently discussed the project with Dua Lipa, tell the At Your Service podcast: "It was something that was exciting because it was terrifying. I think that was a big part of it, like: "Oh, no, Barbie."

"It felt like vertigo, starting to write it, like: 'Where do you even begin, and what would be the story?' And I think it was that feeling I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually that's where the best stuff is, where you're like, 'I am terrified of that.' Anything where you're like, 'This could be a career-ender' — then you're like, 'I should probably do it'."

Filmmaker Greta was nominated for the best director and best original screenplay Oscars for 2017 coming-of-age drama Lady Bird and scored a nod for best adapted screenplay with 2019’s Little Women.

The film is a joint project between Warner Bros and Barbie manufacturer Mattel.

Barbie is scheduled for a cinema release on July 21 2023.
