Marcus Smart’s departure from the Boston Celtics may still sting, but his impact on the community, particularly through his charitable work, remains with us. That is especially true with his contributions to children in New England fighting cancer.
One such notable example of Smart’s philanthropy is his Smart Carts, especially those at The Children’s Room, a bereavement center in Arlington, Massachusetts. The facility avoids looking like a hospital to facilitate bringing kids together after they lose a loved one to the same disease that took Smart’s brother in 2004, per recent reporting from Celtics Blog’s Bobby Manning.
Buy Celtics Tickets“We can’t wait to bring the kids in, and the Smart Cart itself. It’s awesome,” shared executive director Jon Gay. “It’s also fun to see Marcus Smart (on the cart) because kids love basketball and we try to bring our teenagers to games.”

“I’m actually in touch with the Celtics right now to try to go to a game this fall, because a lot of these teenagers would not have the chance to go to a game if it weren’t for coming with our program,” he added.
“It doesn’t say Celtics on (Smart’s jersey), but … I think it brings in the fact that kids can relate to (him),” suggested Gay, hinting at one of many ways the Flower Mound native’s bond with Boston will remain even after his exit.
