This gig-style piece about the impact that mental health and past trauma can have on a relationship is a showcase for Maimuna Memon. A powerful presence in musicals for a decade, who won an Olivier for her performance in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet at the Donmar in 2024, she is here the composer, lyricist, book writer, bandleader, arranger and star.
The conceit is that her character Ria is a singer-songwriter with a versatile and sympathetic three-person backing group. They’re laying down an arc of songs detailing her move to London from Blackburn and the rapid flare and implosion of her relationship with Dan, a fellow musician suffering manic depression.
