Manhunt for 'prisoner at large' following escape from busy Scots court

A PRISONER sparked a major security alert at Hamilton Sheriff Court after escaping from custody and triggering a police manhunt.

The man fled from the court cells via a fire door, setting off an alarm and prompting an immediate response from security staff and police.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 3.30pm on Monday, 21 September, 2026, a man escaped from security staff at Hamilton Sheriff Court, Beckford Street, Hamilton.

"He was traced by police officers a short time later and returned to security staff.

"A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."

The incident temporarily halted court proceedings as officers launched a search of the area.

A spokesperson for GEOAmey, the prisoner transport service, said: "A person in custody was briefly at large; however, they were quickly reapprehended with support from Police Scotland."
