Mancunian Way set to be SHUT over busy weekend with Manchester United fans and Irish Parade visitors told to plan ahead

Manchester city centre visitors and football fans have been urged to plan ahead as the Mancunian Way will be shut this weekend.

A full closure of the main road will be in place on Saturday and Sunday (March 12 and 13).

The closure will be in place between Pin Mill Brow and Chester Road roundabout as annual maintenance work is carried out, transport bosses said.

Drivers are being urged to plan ahead and find different routes over what is set to be a busy weekend in and around the city centre.

Manchester United take on Tottenham Hotspur at 5.30pm at Old Trafford on Saturday.

86,000 vehicles would usually use the Mancunian Way on a matchday, TfGM said.

There are also events at the AO Arena over the weekend - with Manchester Thunder facing Leeds Rhinos in the netball from 5.30pm on Saturday and The Wanted playing on Sunday.

The Irish Parade will also be held on Sunday, with road closures also set to be in place on Queens Road and Cheetham Hill Road.

People are being 'strongly urged' to use public transport if they can.

Areas and roads around the Mancunian Way are expected to be congested.

This closure comes after a new speed limit was introduced for the road following a series of crashes.

A temporary 30mph speed limit is now in force between Chester Road to Pin Mill Brow for at least 18 months.
