Manchester United vs Aston Villa LIVE
Manchester United consolidated their hold on the third rung of the Premier League table as they beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford. A frenetic three-goal second-half followed a markedly pedestrian first, which produced just two clear-cut chances as United struggled to impose themselves against a physically formidable Villa back line.
But it did not take long for the hosts to break the deadlock in the second-half, as Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes once again combined, the former nodding the latter’s corner beyond the reach of Emi Martinez. United failed to impose themselves thereafter, allowing Villa back into contention as Ross Barkley lashed one home to equalise. But a devastating sequence of events then put the result beyond doubt as Matheus Cunha fired home from a superb Fernandes through-ball and Benjamin Sesko fired a third home mere minutes after coming off the bench.
The win puts United three points clear of Villa and six ahead of Chelsea, massively boosting their bid to return to the Champions League next season. It also takes Michael Carrick’s managerial record at Old Trafford to a flawless six wins from six. Manchester United 1-1 Aston Villa

Manchester United 1-1 Aston Villa
15:26 , Arthur Ferridge68mins: Abraham is in acres of space in the box but miscontrols Bailey’s cross, which would have teed up a near-certain goal had he got the shot away.
Manchester United 1-1 Aston Villa

Manchester United 1-1 Aston Villa

Manchester United 1-1 Aston Villa
15:24 , Arthur FerridgeYou feel this would be incredibly harsh to disallow the goal.
Manchester United 1-1 Aston Villa

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Aston Villa | Barkley '64
15:23 , Arthur FerridgeBarkley levels it for Villa, and you can’t say it hasn’t been coming! A lovely finish from close range which caught Lammens wrong-footed.
Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:21 , Arthur Ferridge63mins: Onana does very well to get back to his feet and get a shot away after stumbling in the United box. Lammens reacts quickly to parry.
Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:20 , Arthur Ferridge62mins: Casemiro whips a smart ball in for Dalot, which he does get his head to, if rather awkwardly. It demands the intervention of Martinez, who has no issue.

15:20 , Arthur Ferridge62mins: Diallo skins both Villa substitutes with a deft turn.
Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:18 , Arthur Ferridge60mins: McGinn lofts a great ball in for Mings but he heads over.

Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:18 , Arthur Ferridge60mins: Casemiro has gone into the book for that tackle, by the way.
Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:17 , Arthur Ferridge59mins: Casemiro sticks one on Rogers and both seem in need of treatment.
Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:16 , Arthur Ferridge58mins: The corner comes to nothing, but still Villa hold onto the ball. They’ve responded well to going behind but really must make the possession count.
Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:15 , Arthur Ferridge57mins: Buendia takes the free-kick... and hits the wall. Corner ball.
Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:14 , Arthur Ferridge56mins: Villa do not seem keen to stay behind in this match for too long. McGinn makes a meal of Onana’s cross and fails to get a shot away, but Casemiro’s foul on Rogers hands the Midlanders a free-kick just outside the D.
Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
15:13 , Arthur Ferridge55mins: Now, can Villa react? Or will United twist the knife...
GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa | Casemiro '53
15:11 , Arthur FerridgeAnd the opener comes from nowhere, but not from an unfamiliar source - Casemiro nods a corner home at the near post to put United in front!
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
15:10 , Arthur FerridgeAnother pacey attack from United. Rogers loses the ball and the hosts break at pace - Mbeumo puts his foot through Fernandes’ pass first time and demands a save from the Yashin winner.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
15:09 , Arthur Ferridge51mins: Fernandes laces one goalwards, but Barkley stretches a leg out to deny his effort and give United a corner.
It rattles out to Cunha, whose volley bobbles wide.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
15:08 , Arthur Ferridge50mins: United are the much more lively side out so far in this period, and Villa are all at sea. Some scrappy defending has proven effective, though, and they are just about keeping their heads above water.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
15:06 , Arthur Ferridge48mins: Diallo picks up Mbeumo’s pass and gets an early shot away on his weak foot, but it is wide of the mark.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
15:04 , Arthur Ferridge46mins: A lively start from United, who are whipping crosses into the box, but Villa’s towering back-line are equal to them all thus far.
2ND HALF: Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
15:03 , Arthur FerridgeWe're back underway! Who will stamp their authority on this tie?
Around the grounds
15:02 , Arthur FerridgeNo goals in any of the 2pm kick-offs so far, which is good. There has, at least, been a red card at Selhurst Park, where Gabriel Gudmundsson has been dismissed for a second yellow card.
Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa
Nottm Forest 0-0 Fulham
Crystal Palace 0-0 Leeds
HAL F-TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:47 , Arthur FerridgeA forgettable opening period at Old Trafford.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:47 , Arthur Ferridge45+1mins: McGinn’s corner doesn’t beat the first man and United counter, but Onana stands in the way of Cunha’s deep cross. Quality sorely lacking throughout this half.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:46 , Arthur Ferridge45mins: Villa win a free kick just outside the centre-circle. McGinn lofts it into the box and Onana loses the aerial but wins a corner. Can they find the breakthrough before the break?
One minute has been added, which paints a picture of exactly how little drama there has been in this opening period.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:44 , Arthur Ferridge43mins: Lively attack from Villa as Barkley makes a marauding run through the middle and plays Watkins into space, but Yoro slides in to block his shot.
United counter and Fernandes has a pop from range, which curls tamely wide. Not one for his highlight reel.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:43 , Arthur Ferridge42mins: You wonder if that booking to Watkins might prompt Emery to throw Abraham into the mix in the second half. Could the Midlanders benefit from having a bit more of a target-man in the middle?
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:42 , Arthur Ferridge41mins: Watkins seems to be clean through on goal but is revealed to be offside by a good yard or two. The flag goes up and the whistle blows, but he opts to shoot anyway and is duly booked. Bizarre decision from the striker.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:41 , Arthur Ferridge41mins: Yoro miscontrols a simple pass to gift Villa a throw-in in the attacking half.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:41 , Arthur Ferridge40mins: Rogers plays Watkins into space down the right flank, but he is held up by Maguire, who has been solid defensively. Watkins just about flips McGinn in behind, but Shaw recovers to stop him in his tracks and win a goal kick. Solid defending from the hosts.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:39 , Arthur Ferridge38mins: That should have been the opener! A wonderful ball from Fernandes sets Dalot free in the box and all he needs to do is get the shot on target, but he launches his effort into Row Z.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:37 , Arthur Ferridge37mins: Konsa does well to slide in and block Casemiro’s shot.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:37 , Arthur Ferridge35mins: Dery me. An awkward bouncing ball falls to Mbeumo, who sees his name in lights and goes for the first time volley. It is shanked so high and so wide it doesn’t actually leave the pitch, and United can continue their attack from the far corner.
He’s really struggled to influence this match, Mbeumo. Just 12 touches of the ball thus far.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:35 , Arthur Ferridge34mins: Fernandes attempts a lofted ball up to Cunha, but Bogarde intervenes. Shaw recovers possession, and United are content to simply pass around the edge of the box. Villa are sitting behind the ball here and the hosts just cannot find a way through.
Eventually, though, Casemiro’s speculative cross is put behind by Bogarde and United will have a corner.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:32 , Arthur Ferridge32mins: And just when it seemed like things were getting interesting, all the vim, vigour and creativity has disappeared from the game again. What can you do.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:28 , Arthur Ferridge27mins: Mainoo does well to break a tackle and square to Cunha, but some great defending from Barkley forces the Brazilian a ways back from goal. United come again, though, and Cunha’s cross is headed back into Martinez’s hands by Bogarde.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:25 , Arthur Ferridge24mins: Right, things are starting to liven up here! Villa take their turn to spend some time on the ball and they are finally getting a bit of energy into their passing. This latest attack ends with a wayward shot from McGinn, the quality of which was not becoming of the build-up play which preceded it.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:23 , Arthur Ferridge22mins: Great save from Martinez! United’s corner finds Maguire, who knocks it across the box for Diallo. His headed effort demands an impressive full-stretch stop from the Argentine.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:22 , Arthur Ferridge21mins: Another sweet United cross, coming from Dalot on the right flank this time. There is nobody there to get on the end of it - again.
Bogarde puts it behind and Mings clears the resultant corner. He has started well here - not many of the 22 men on the pitch can say that.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:21 , Arthur Ferridge20mins: No shots on target in this game yet, by the way.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:19 , Arthur Ferridge18mins: The corner comes to nothing, Mings with a headed clearance.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:18 , Arthur Ferridge17mins: That was a chance! Cunha puts a lovely cross in but it is inches out of Diallo’s reach. He appeared to have been pulled back, but VAR checks and clears. Digne puts it behind for a corner.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:18 , Arthur Ferridge16mins: It is a slightly better spell from the hosts, this. They aren’t doing anything terribly impressive, but they are at least enjoying some sustained spells on the ball and are showing a bit of intent to go at Villa.
There is just very little energy in the tie, which is understandable for Villa but less so for United, who last played a match almost two weeks ago.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:16 , Arthur Ferridge15mins: Cunha attempts a ball over the top for Dalot, who is making a run into the right corner. To call the pass wayward would be a considerable understatement - I’m not entirely sure where it landed!
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:14 , Arthur Ferridge14mins: This is more like it. A really snappy attacking move from United has Villa all at sea, but Fernandes’ cross is well defended. The visitors look to counter but Watkins is isolated and cannot get by Maguire.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:11 , Arthur Ferridge10mins: Buendia is tripped in the left channel about 30 yards out, and Villa have a free-kick. They take their sweet time conferencing over how to take it, before Rogers takes it short and Diallo cuts it out far too easily. What a waste of everyone’s time.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:10 , Arthur Ferridge9mins: Barkley seems to be getting a bit frustrated, here, as he has seen two or three attempted through-balls into the box blocked in the last couple of minutes.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:09 , Arthur Ferridge8mins: Shaky stuff from Villa. They are knocking it around at the back at rather a pedestrian pace before Konsa is forced to go long under a spirited press from Bruno Fernandes. His hurried clearance is straight out of play.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:07 , Arthur Ferridge6mins: Maguire does well to nick possession in midfield but his forward ball for Fernandes is overhit.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:06 , Arthur Ferridge5mins: Barkley boots one long into the United box, which Yoro deals with. McGinn then clatters into Maguire as he looks to nick a rebound and lays the big man flat out in doing so. Anthony Taylor awards a foul.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:05 , Arthur Ferridge4mins: Luke Shaw skins Morgan Rogers to set United on the attack, but a lofted cross for Mbeumo does not find the intended target.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:04 , Arthur Ferridge3mins: The disjointed start continues as Martinez lofts a pass out from the back directly into touch.
Manchester United 0-0 Aston Villa
14:02 , Arthur Ferridge2mins: A scrappy first couple of minutes as neither side seems keen to hold onto the ball. Long-ball central thus far.

Michael Carrick speaks to Sky Sports
13:45 , Arthur Ferridge“Of course, it is a big opportunity. It is an important game, great for us to have a game like this with so much to play for. We’re looking forward to playing a tough team with a good coach.
“There’s a bit more time to prepare [having 11 days between matches], but the rhythm is slightly affected. We haven’t made anything of it, it is what it is. It is a little unusual.
“We’ve been working hard and trained well. We’ve freshened up and we’re ready to go today.”
On dropping Benjamin Sesko: “We need that impact off the bench. It wasn’t an easy decision.”
Unai Emery previews the tie
13:43 , Arthur Ferridge“Yes, it is a very good opportunity. How we are performing in 30 days is really fantastic but there is still work to do and we have challenges in front, like today. United are getting better. They are at the same point as us. Playing away for us is a huge challenge at Old Trafford. I am so, so excited how we can show our capacity today and giving our best.”
Aston Villa take to the pitch
13:41 , Arthur FerridgeThe visitors attempt to warm up in the Manchester rain.

Jadon Sancho
13:39 , Arthur FerridgeThere is no Jadon Sancho in the Aston Villa squad today as he is unable to face his parent club.
He will be out of contract this summer, and it does not seem likely that United will look to renew his deal.
You wonder where he might land ahead of next campaign...
Jim Ratcliffe issues verdict on Michael Carrick
13:31 , Arthur FerridgeJim Ratcliffe is a big fan of Michael Carrick.
Speaking from the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend, he said: "He's doing an excellent job. Yeah, absolutely.
"Yes, clearly we're thinking about [qualifying for Europe]. But there's still seven or eight games to go. Still a while yet."
Pressed as to whether he would give the former midfielder the permanent job when his contract expires in summer, he added: "Not going there."

Weather report
13:31 , Arthur FerridgeThere are grim conditions at Old Trafford presently: wet and windy.
The temperature sits at 9C, rain is falling, and a gale is gusting. Proper football weather!
This has the makings of a classic...

Bryan Mbeumo on facing Aston Villa and his best position
13:15 , Arthur Ferridge“We think it is going to be a good challenge today. Two teams who want to win and reach the top. It should be a nice game.
“Obviously I can play different positions and I have in the past, but I don’t have a special one.” [Sky Sports]
Aston Villa XI
13:06 , Arthur FerridgeAs expected, John McGinn returns from injury to captain the Villans at Old Trafford.

Tammy Abraham remains on the bench, with Ollie Watkins getting the nod up top.

Also whys he brought Dalot back in? He should be nowhere near the team 😭
So in short im not a fan of this lineup.#MUFC #MUNAVL
Man Utd XI
12:57 , Arthur FerridgeGreat news for United as both Mason Mount and Noussair Mazraoui make the matchday squad! The pair were both considered doubts before today, but have shaken off their respective injuries to make the subs bench here.
Carrick makes an interesting call in attack, though, dropping Benjamin Sesko to accommodate Amad Diallo on the flank. That should see Bryan Mbeumo starting through the middle.

Race for Europe blown wide open
12:23 , Arthur FerridgeToday could have looked very different in the context of the race to qualify for Europe.
Had Chelsea beat Newcastle yesterday, they’d have finished Saturday in third place in the table, and would likely have ended today in fourth pending the outcome of United vs Aston Villa.
However, they produced a turgid display at Stamford Bridge and Newcastle won 1-0 - their first victory in SW6 since 2012.
As such, today’s victor will put themselves six points clear of the fifth-placed Blues.
A colossal opportunity.
Man Utd predicted XI
12:15 , Arthur FerridgePredicted Man Utd XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Yoro, Maguire, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko
Man Utd vs Aston Villa head to head

Manchester United wins: 107
Aston Villa wins: 53
Draws: 42
Standard Sport prediction
11:59 , Arthur FerridgeMan Utd suffered a setback against Newcastle last time out and will be keen to ensure that result was nothing more than a minor blip.
An 11-day break between fixtures could prove crucial here as Villa have been in Europa League action away at Lille and winning that competition may be their best route back into the Champions League next season.
Manchester United to win, 2-0.
Aston Villa early team news
11:51 , Arthur FerridgeAs for Villa, Jadon Sancho cannot feature at Old Trafford as the rules in his loan agreement prevent the winger from facing his parent club.
Matty Cash faces a late fitness test, Boubacar Kamara is a long-term absentee and the game comes too soon for Youri Tielemans, though he is making good progress as he bids to return from injury.
John McGinn is back - ahead of schedule - as he replaced Douglas Luiz to play the final 13 minutes against Lille but may have to settle for a place on the bench again.

Man Utd early team news
11:43 , Arthur FerridgeMan Utd defender Lisandro Martinez will miss a fourth game in a row with a calf injury. Matthijs de Ligt and Patrick Dorgu remain sidelined, though the latter could be available for selection at some point in April.
Noussair Mazraoui should be ok despite picking up a knock at St. James’ Park that forced him off late on. Mason Mount could return to the matchday squad after resuming full training after a spell on the sidelines with a knock.
Carrick does have a decision to make in attack as Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko are battling for three spots.
