Michael Carrick has emerged as one of the top contenders to take over at Manchester United on an interim basis.
United are likely to hire an interim coach until the end of the season and then appoint a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim in the summer.
Amorim was sacked on Monday after an explosive final press conference in the wake of United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds.
Darren Fletcher has been placed in charge of the team for Wednesday’s clash with Burnley but United are assessing their options.
Carrick is among the names in the frame to take the reigns at Old Trafford and United are said to be ready to make an approach for their former midfielder.
The i report that United are expected to approach Carrick “in the coming days” but it is unclear if he would be interested in the role.
Carrick has been on the coaching staff at Old Trafford in the past and was briefly caretaker manager of United in 2018 following the departure of Jose Mourinho and then again in 2021 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left.
Carrick was most recently manager of Middlesbrough in the Championship but departed the Teesiders last summer.
He made 463 appearances for United in a 12-year spell, winning 17 trophies before retiring in 2018.
The ex-England international has been out of work since leaving the Riverside Stadium, where he was replaced by Rob Edwards.
Edwards then moved on to manage Wolves back in the Premier League, and Boro moved swiftly to bring in Kim Hellberg, the Swede, from Hammarby IF.
Hellberg had held talks with Swansea in the days prior to being offered the Middlesbrough job.
