Manchester United stance on Frenkie de Jong as Christian Eriksen details transfer talks

United to continue De Jong pursuit

Manchester United are continuing with their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong as their back-up targets are not deemed to be at the same level as the Barcelona midfielder.

Well-placed sources privy to transfer discussions have stressed United are determined to back their manager - Erik ten Hag - after he identified De Jong as a potential fulcrum of the team several months ago.

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans is admired by United and has entered the last 12 months of his contract, but he is a markedly different midfielder to De Jong, whose skill-set is unique.

Eriksen details previous transfer talks

Christian Eriksen discussed the possibility of joining Manchester United with their last three permanent managers, before he signed for the club on a free transfer last month.

United were first linked with a move for Eriksen, 30, when he was at Ajax, but the Denmark international moved to Tottenham for £11.5million in 2013 - the same summer United appointed David Moyes.

It was reported back in 2019 that then-United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had spoken with Eriksen to gauge his interest in a possible transfer to United, but the playmaker's preference was to move abroad and he, subsequently, signed for Italian giants Inter Milan.
