Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes claims unlikely Champions League record

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has claimed an unlikely accolade following the culmination of the Champions League.

Real Madrid lifted the famous trophy on Saturday night, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in Paris. Karim Benzema had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half as Thibaut Courtois kept the Merseyside club out at the other end.

Vinicius Junior ended the evening as the hero as he scored from close range on the hour mark to send Los Blancos fans wild. With the famous competition drawing to a close for another season, Fernandes managed to claim a surprise record.

The Portuguese midfielder's seven assists in this campaign's Champions League meant that he created more goals in Europe's premier competition than anyone else. Vinicius Junior and Leroy Sane finished joint second with six assists while Ajax's Antony, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, finished third.

Fernandes will not have the opportunity to defend his record next season, though. Due to United's worst ever Premier League season, in terms of points tally at least, Fernandes and his teammates will have to settle for Europa League football in Erik ten Hag's first year in Manchester.
