Manchester United player ratings vs Chelsea: Classy Casemiro seals Champions League return

Manchester United sealed qualification for the Champions League with a win over Chelsea.

Erik ten Hag’s secured their place in the Premier League’s top four thanks to first-half goals from Casemiro and Anthony Martial before Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford scored after the break.

While it was always unlikely arch rivals Liverpool would be able to catch them on the final day, the three points are enough to send United back into Europe’s elite club competition.

Here’s how Man Utd players rated.

David De Gea - 7

Pulled off a number of good saves at 2-0 despite having little else to do. Could do little about Joao Felix’s late consolation.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka -7

Allowed Lewis Hall to get in behind to create a few early chances but recovered well.

Raphael Varane - 7

Performed well when called upon. Oozes class.

Victor Lindelof - 7

Recovered from an early slip to put in a composed performance against a very weak Chelsea attack.

Luke Shaw - 6

Hardly at his very best but his half-time withdrawal perhaps explains that.

Casemiro - 8

Scored the crucial opener and helped tee up the second with a pass to split the Chelsea defence. Fitting it would be the Brazilian to get such a positive night up and running.

Christian Eriksen - 7

Composed as ever and was the man who played in the cross for Casemiro’s opener.

Antony - 6

Curled a shot wide before being subbed off too early to make much of an impact elsewhere.

Bruno Fernandes - 7

Unlucky to hit the bar in the opening stages of the second-half and won the penalty he scored with a wonderful bit of skill.

Jadon Sancho - 6

Still to see the best of the player who thrilled at Borussia Dortmund but recording an assist is a positive.

Anthony Martial - 6

Got on the scoresheet but did very little else.

Substitutes:

Marcus Rashford (for Antony ‘29) - 7

Gave Chelsea’s backline something to think about even before scoring, albeit the goal was a total gift.

Tyrell Malacia (for Shaw ‘45) - 6

Did not have much to do as Chelsea collapsed in the second-half.

Alejandro Garnacho (for Martial ‘70) - 6

A willing runner on the break but first touch and final ball let him down.

Fred (for Eriksen ‘70) - 6

Didn’t put a foot wrong during his late cameo.

Scott McTominay (for Fernandes ‘85)

Not used: Butland, Dalot, Maguire, Weghorst
