The Red Devils struggled to build on Antony’s stunning 25-yard curling effort in the first half.
Charlton competed well with Erik ten Hag’s underwhelming side and the manager called on a host of star players such as Rashford, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen during the second half.

Nizaar Kinsella was at Old Trafford watching the last club in London to play in the Carabao Cup this season...
Tom Heaton - 6
The 36-year-old made his first start for Manchester United since joining the club’s academy over 20 years ago. He looked at home in goal, collecting a number of crosses that came his way but wasn’t really drawn into making big saves.
Diogo Dalot- 5
In a bid to wrestle back his right back spot from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Dalot got injured midway through the first half.
Harry Maguire - 6
The captain still needs to win the trust of his manager. Dominated his aerial duels and tried to start attacks to drive his team up the pitch. A steady performance where he barked instructions as the leader.
Coming back for his first appearance as a world champion, Martinez made a good clearance towards the end of the first half. Lost a few duels to six-foot-four-inch Miles Leaburn.
Tyrell Malacia - 5
Sloppy in possession and struggled to cope with the pace and trickery of Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, the Crystal Palace loanee who was one of Charlton’s best players.
Scott McTominay - 6
Most of his passes were played pretty safe as he renewed the ‘McFred’ partnership but he performed best when it was broken up, allowing him to roam further forward late on.
Fred - 7
Not known for his shooting, the Brazilian had an effort blocked in the 12th minute and struck a stunning free-kick against the post in the 36th minute. A good controlling performance in which he also registered an assist.
Antony - 7
The Brazil international scored a trademark left foot, curling finish that he is known for after a sustained spell of possession. At times, overplayed and put his team in danger but almost scored again with a similar technique early in the second half.
Kobbie Mainoo - 5
The 17-year-old is highly rated at Old Trafford and made his debut. He didn’t quite take the game by storm but he didn’t look out of place either. Some nice touches and some wasteful ones around the box but it was a momentous day for the youngster.
Alejandro Garnacho - 8
Started well and tore Charlton’s Sean Clare apart in the first half but couldn’t quite score or get an assist. Ultimately faded as the game wore on but he was a star performer at Old Trafford.
Anthony Elanga - 4
Elanga worked hard in a rare appearance but had to do so given he was out of position up front. The 20-year-old struggled badly with the role and proved the need for Wout Weghorst to join the club on loan.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 6
Produced a steady defensive display against the tricky Corey Blackett-Taylor. He did get beaten once in the second half but coped well in his duel.
Casemiro - 7
Brought on in the 60th minute after a bad spell for Man United, they immediately regained control through one of the club’s most in-form players.

Almost scored late on after his introduction with Casemiro, which helped control the ball better against a resurgent second half Charlton side.
Marcus Rashford - 9
Man United needed their star man in a poor second half and he killed the match with two goals late on. The England international proved he can be a superstar at Old Trafford and is on an impressive run of 15 goals in his last 13 Carabao Cup games. United needed him in a poor second half and he delivered.
Facundo Pellestri - 7
An advert for a potential move? The Uruguay international is on the fringes at Old Trafford but produced a stunning assist for Marcus Rashford after winning the ball on the edge of his own box, playing the England international into a goal scoring position at the other end seconds later.
