Manchester United player ratings: Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka serve up FA Cup semi-final stinkers

Manchester United narrowly avoided humiliation after beating Coventry City on penalties to reach the FA Cup Final.

United thought they were coasting to victory after Scott McTominay tapped in the opener from close range after just 23 minutes and Harry Maguire headed in Bruno Fernandes’s corner just before half-time.

Fernandes looked to have settled the semi-final with his deflected shot in the 58th minute but United’s makeshift back four allowed Ellis Simms to pull one back, O’Hare’s deflected shot set up a nervy finish and Haji Wright equalise in the 95th minute with a penalty.

Coventry thought they had won it in the final minute of extra time, only for VAR to rule out the goal for offside, handing United a reprieve. In the shootout, Ben Sheaf missed his before Rasmus Hojlund booked a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final against Manchester City, which will be played on 25 May.

Man United line up

Andre Onana - 7

The United no1 looked commanding, passed well but was beaten three times. None were mistakes but needed his penalty save during the shootout.

Diogo Dalot - 7

He brilliantly mopped up counterattacks with his blistering pace and used that speed on the overlap before crossing to create the opener. He also cleared an effort off the line.

Casemiro - 4

The Brazilian played well centre-back until the collapse where he was particularly poor for the first goal and missed his penalty in the shootout.

Harry Maguire - 6

Maguire is United’s only fit central defender but dominated in the air all game and did so when scoring the second goal. But was poor during the collapse.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 3

The makeshift left-back was caught out of position for Simms’s goal, saw O’Hare’s shot deflect off him into the goal and gave away the penalty.

Kobbie Mainoo - 6

A cool but unremarkable first appearance at Wembley. United collapsed when he came off.

Scott McTominay - 6

The returning midfielder opened the scoring by ghosting into the box and tapping in from close range but was poor in possession.

Bruno Fernandes - 8

The captain scored the third goal with some sharp play in the box and set up Maguire’s header. He was one of the best players on the pitch.

Marcus Rashford - 4

Rashford’s finishing was terrible and some United fans booed him Wembley. However, he did hit the bar with one good effort.

Rasmus Hojlund - 4

A flat performance for the striker, who hasn’t scored in two months.

Alejandro Garnacho - 5

Garnacho was both dangerous and wasteful at Wembley.

Substitutes

Antony - 4

A weak substitute performance where he wasted chances and was part of a structural collapse.

Christian Eriksen - 4

Offered little in a sluggish cameo.

Amad Diallo - 4

Didn’t come close to scoring after his introduction.

Omari Fosun - 6

The youngster came close to scoring in extra time.
