Manchester United player ratings vs Aston Villa as Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof good

David de Gea

Blocked Alexandre Moreno's strike at 0-0 and emerged from his area to head the ball away when Villa threatened. 7

Diogo Dalot

Back at right-back, Dalot defended with relative ease against a narrow Villa side without having much of an impact in the final third. 6

Victor Lindelof

Another fine display in his fifth successive start and he coped largely well with Ollie Watkins, cushioning one header away from the striker. 8

Luke Shaw

Cemented his status as the go-to centre half in a United defensive injury crisis. Asserted himself authoritatively against Ollie Watkins. 8

Tyrell Malacia

The first half was his best in months, enhanced by two full-blooded tackles on John McGinn and Ashley Young. Did not always make the most of space in the final third. 6

Casemiro

Started impressively, struck the crossbar and his commanding header set Marcus Rashford on his way. Maintained his performance level after the pause. 8

Christian Eriksen

Had a lot of the ball and constantly looked for openings but seldom found them. Shook his head in frustration at his own performance. 6

Bruno Fernandes

Switched to the right-hand side - where he played to influential effect against Villa in November - and scored. 7

Marcel Sabitzer

Energetic and had a good early chance but larruped the ball over the crossbar. Not always attuned to the same frequency as teammates. 6

Jadon Sancho

Did not give Ashley Young an easy afternoon with his bursts on the ball and interplay but he never created or had an outstanding chance. 6

Marcus Rashford

Had a fine chance to put United ahead but was denied by Emiliano Martinez. His weaker shot led to a goal but his hold-up play was awry amid United's directness. 6

Subs

Antony

Had a weak shot at Martinez. 6

Fred

Showed willing. 6

Harry Maguire

A couple of clearances. 6

Anthony Martial

Lethargic again. 5

Manager

Relocated Fernandes against Villa again and once again, he had an impact. Rightly resisted changes around the hour. 6
