Manchester United 'join race' for Chelsea transfer target as Champions League exit looms

Manchester United have reportedly joined the race for Chelsea target Rafael Leão, according to the Daily Star.

Leão was a key figure as AC Milan secured their first Serie A title win in 11 years but could now be set for an exit after rejecting the offer of a new five-year deal.

Chelsea are said to be long-term admirers of the Portuguese attacker, who started in both of his side's UEFA Champions League group stage defeats to Graham Potter's team. His addition would, undoubtedly, complement Todd Boehly's youth-driven recruitment policy.

If an agreement cannot be struck with the 23-year-old, Milan will be required to part ways with Leão in the near future or, instead, risk losing him for free in the summer of 2024 upon the expiry of his current deal.

However, it now appears that Erik ten Hag and Manchester United are ready to compete with the Blues in a deal for the former Sporting Lisbon and Lille star. The Red Devils have previously sent scouts to track Leão's progress on several occasions, including in recent months.

Reports claim that the Rossoneri value Leão at £100 million, but his contractual situation means a deal could, possibly, be struck for around £60 million.

Chelsea currently boast a wealth of options in attacking areas, with Mason Mount's brace against Aston Villa highlighting that fact. The likes of Mount, Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic all offer Potter strength in depth.

With both teams set to battle for a top-four spot this season, the incentive of Champions League football may prove decisive in the fight for Leão's signature.
