Manchester United 'getting closer' to Frenkie de Jong deal and more transfer rumours

Reports in Spain suggest Manchester United are getting closer to a deal for Frenkie de Jong.

United’s pursuit of the Barcelona midfielder has been ongoing since the start of the summer. De Jong was identified as an ideal target by Erik ten Hag as the former Ajax boss eyes up a reunion at Old Trafford.

His efforts to make the 25-year-old his first signing haven’t quite gone to plan. United have been left frustrated in their talks with Barcelona, with initial discussions seeing the two sides a fair distance apart in their respective valuations.

United have lined up another offer this week, although they are willing to walk away from the deal should they continue to be left frustrated. However, Spanish publication Sport suggest they may have enjoyed a much-needed breakthrough.

Their report claims De Jong is ‘getting closer’ to a move to United. It is also suggested that both sides hope to close in on finalising a deal in the ‘coming days’.

As of yet, though, there is no agreement between the two clubs. De Jong still appears the most likely to be announced as United’s first signing of the summer.

Elsewhere, United are being linked with a surprise move for Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou. Reports in France suggest the 23-year-old is being monitored by a number of English clubs, including United.

Zagadou has struggled to meet the potential many had predicted after making the move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. The French Under-21 international is now eyeing up a departure, with plenty of clubs linked to his services.

French outlet Foot Mercato have suggested Nice are aiming to sign the defender as his deal expires in Germany this summer. United are said to be among those vying for his signature, with Ten Hag eager to sign a new centre-back.
