Manchester United fans thought Ferran Torres dropped a major hint about Frenkie de Jong transfer

Manchester United fans on social media were sent into frenzy on Thursday evening when fans had thought the former Manchester City winger Ferran Torres had dropped a major hint about Frenkie de Jong's future at Barcelona. United have chased De Jong's signature for over two months with Erik ten Hag identifying him for his midfield.

Manchester United have agreed a deal with Barcelona for De Jong, 25, and hope to sign the midfielder whilst on tour in Australia. Reports have further emerged today that although a fee has been agreed, no agreement has been made between the player and United.

Spanish sources have told the Manchester Evening News that De Jong has accepted he will have to leave Barcelona and the club's president, Joan Laporta, is waiting for the transfer to go through before sanctioning moves in the market.

United fans had thought that this had meant that the Spaniard had switched his Barcelona shirt number from 19 to 21, suggesting that a move to United was on the cards.

However, the Manchester Evening News understands that Torres has had this on his page since his time at City - where he did indeed wear 21 - as shown in this tweet from last December ...

Torres joined Barcelona after 18 months at City, where he impressed but was unable to hold down a regular spot in the team.
