Police investigation launched over Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof hit by an object during FA Cup Final

Metropolitan Police are investigating an incident from the FA Cup Final in which Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof was hit by an object thrown from the Manchester City end at Wembley.

Lindelof appeared to be struck on the face by a lighter as United celebrated after Bruno Fernandes equalised from the penalty spot to make it 1-1 in the first half.

The Swedish defender went down holding his face but he was OK to continue. United players then appeared to point out an object to referee Paul Tierney.

A statement on Twitter read: We are aware of an incident earlier at the [FA Cup Final] where an object was thrown towards the pitch during the first half of the game. We are working with officials [at Wembley Stadium] and reviewing CCTV footage.

The incident came after United were awarded a controversial penalty after handball was given by VAR after Aaron Wan-Bissaka headed on to the arm of Jack Grealish.

Fernandes got back into the game after they had fallen behind to the fastest goal in FA Cup Final history when City captain Ilkay Gundogan scored after 12 seconds.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker said: “It looks like a lighter or a battery or a vape. We do not want to see that.”
