Manchester United captain Harry Maguire gives fitness update after worrying England substitution

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has provided an update on his fitness after being subbed off by England during their goal-packed World Cup opener with Iran.

Goals from Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka (two), Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish saw England get off to the best possible start in Group B as they recorded an eye-catching 6-2 win. It was an impressive display from the Three Lions and Maguire played his part at both ends at the Khalifa International Stadium.

He crashed one header against the crossbar before further demonstrating his threat from set-pieces with an assist for Saka to make it 2-0 in the first half. Maguire was not the only United name to shine, either, as his two clubmates Luke Shaw and Rashford made their mark with an assist and goal respectively.

However, there was one concerning moment for the Old Trafford contingent as Maguire went down when Iran hit back with their first consolation. He was unable to continue as Gareth Southgate sent on four substitutes, including Rashford, with Tottenham defender Eric Dier replacing Maguire for the final stages.

He then appeared to go through concussion protocol with England's medical staff. Maguire then got back to his feet as he, eventually, made his way off the pitch in a slight daze.

Fortunately for the United captain and England, though, it does not seem to be as bad as first feared with Maguire providing an update on his social media channels.

Next up for Southgate and his players in Group B is a Friday night showdown against the United States and Maguire will, seemingly, be fit enough to play in that meeting. Posting on his Instagram story, the 29-year-old said: "I felt unwell in the second half so came off as a precaution. I'm looking forward to Friday."

He tagged the official England account onto his post and, also, added a Saint George's flag emoji.
