'Manchester has everything except a beach'... now it'll have one on top of Mayfield Depot

Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown once said that 'Manchester has everything except a beach'. Well, very soon, it will have. Backyard Cinema is set to return to the Depot Mayfield, and it’s bringing the coastline with it.

It’ll be transforming the roof of the former freight depot into a beach, with a massive 30 tonnes of sand. The theme of the pop-up cinema’s summer season is ‘80s Miami beach’.

They’ll be holding weekly beach parties to run alongside their movie screenings, and serving up palm tree cocktails along with some Miami-style art deco styling in the inside of the cinema venue. It all starts on July 5 and will run until early August.

On the programme in the coming months will be movies including the new Barbie and Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, as well as a host of classics like Dirty Dancing, Grease, Back to the Future, Top Gun Maverick, Mean Girls and Pulp Fiction.

Dirty Dancing beach parties will take place every Friday night, and there will be ‘super sing-a-long’ events too. Screenings of films including Grease, Mamma Mia and The Greatest Showman will be shown, during which the audience is encouraged to sing along to the soundtrack.

The pop-up cinema was born in founder Dominic Davies’ own garden for friends and family, before moving on to bigger and bigger venues. A decade on, it now hosts its immersive cinema events all over the country and has screened movies to more than half a million people.

“After the huge success of our winter season we are super excited to bring our smash-hit Miami Beach to the roof of Depot Mayfield,” Davies said. “We are going to take people back to a retro 80s Miami full of glitz and glamour and create the closest thing to a summer holiday in Mayfield.”

Tickets are on sale now, starting at £9.50.

Backyard proved a hit with its debut on the roof of Mayfield last October, turning the space into an 'enchanted forest' for its 10 week run, with movie grade sets including 'Dr Portelli’s Curiosity Shop' and even a 'magical wardrobe'.
