Management branded 'inconsistent' at Toxteth care home

Management and leadership at a Toxteth care home has been deemed “inconsistent” by care inspectors.

A Care Quality Commission (CQC) report into Mersey Parks care home has found that leaders at the Mill Street service created a culture that “did not always support the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care” but has made strides since its previous rating last year. The residential care and nursing home provides personal and nursing care to 102 people aged 65 and over with capacity for up to 120 people.

It is set across four separate single floor units and an office block. The inspection found that the leadership at Mersey Care was inconsistent and could not be improved as it required “consistent good practice over time.”

At its previous inspection, the leadership was deemed to be inadequate with breaches of regulations. The report said: “People and relatives generally told us they felt able to raise concerns and make complaints.

“One relative told us they felt the home was moving in the right direction, however they still felt that some further improvement was needed to ensure communication was better.” The CQC findings made good reading in terms of safety for Mersey Care though, with its rating improving from requires improvement to good, particularly around the management of medicines as this had put “placed people at risk of harm” when inspected last year.

The effectiveness of the care facility was also said to be good following the 2021 visit when the provider had “failed to ensure staff provided people with individualised care.” A spokesperson for Mersey Parks care home said: “Our top priority is to deliver high quality, kind care for each of our residents.

“Our latest CQC report shows we have made excellent progress improving the home under the guidance of a new home manager, and we are pleased these positive changes have been recognised by the comments made by the CQC, our residents and their loved ones. We are very grateful to our colleague team for their dedication and hard work in helping us get care right.

“We know there is still more work to do before we reach the standard we want to be at, and this work continues under the strong leadership we have in the home. We have a comprehensive action plan that we are working through, and we are continuing to work closely with the local authority and our local healthcare partners on this journey.

“We are confident that at our next inspection we will be able to show how the efforts of the team will have enabled us to transform the home and the care we provide.”
