Man was digging a hole for a swimming pool and hit something that wasn’t dirt. Then he found $800,000 staring back at him

A man in France became $800,000 richer after digging a hole for a swimming pool and hitting something that definitely wasn’t dirt. The story, which first broke on CBS News in November 2025, has resurfaced this May 2026, thanks to a fresh wave of social media posts and algorithmic boosts that love a good “ordinary person strikes it rich” tale.

The man was working on his garden in the eastern French town of Neuville-sur-Saône when his shovel struck something solid. Instead of rocks or roots, he uncovered five gold bars and a stash of coins, all tucked away in plastic bags. The total haul cost a cool $800,000. What makes this story even more interesting is that the man actually did the right thing.
