Manchester United are reportedly convinced that Liverpool could make a grave error with Darwin Nunez as the striker edges towards a transfer to Anfield.
The Uruguayan has been courted by a number of clubs this summer following his goalscoring exploits for Benfica throughout the 2021/22 campaign. After hitting 34 goals for the Portuguese giants in all competitions, he is linked with a move away from the Estadio da Luz this summer and a number of Premier League clubs are interested.
United and Liverpool have quickly emerged as the front runners for his services, with the duo keen to add to their forward options ahead of the new campaign. The Reds are searching for a potential replacement for Sadio Mane after he indicated his desire to leave the club.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag may add to his attacking ranks after Edinson Cavani left Old Trafford to leave Cristiano Ronaldo light of support up front. However, United appear to have made a decision on Nunez, with ESPN reporting that they will not pursue his signature due to the threat of being drawn into an expensive bidding war.
As a result, United believe that Liverpool may well be making an error in splashing out a huge sum - believed to be in the region of £85million - on the 22-year-old despite his eye-catching record. The Red Devils have been guilty of spending frivolously in recent seasons.
The Old Trafford outfit paid huge fees for the likes of Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, Angel Di Maria, with little to no success to show for their huge expenditure. Of course, it remains to be seen whether Nunez will be a success in the Premier League following his expected switch to Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp has already expressed his admiration of the striker.

Speaking after the Champions League quarter-final between Liverpool and Benfica last term, Klopp said: “[Nunez is] Really good, really good. I knew it before but he played pretty much in front of me. Physically strong, quick, was calm with his finish. Really good. If he stays healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”
With three years remaining on Nunez's Benfica contract, Liverpool will be forced to pay a huge amount for his services. It has been reported that the initial fee could be in the region of €80million (£68.m).
The Reds are reportedly hoping to finance the signing with the sale of Mane to Bayern Munich. A £40million price tag has been slapped on the Senegalese forward and the German giants have already failed with two bids.
