Man Utd begin Harry Kane transfer pursuit as Daniel Levy sets Tottenham asking price

Manchester United are set to kick-off their chase for Tottenham striker Harry Kane as they attempt to secure a deal for his services this summer.

The Red Devils head into the upcoming transfer window keen to add a big name forward to their squad. Their attempts to replace Cristiano Ronaldo proved frustrating as they were only able to seal a loan move for Burnley ’s Wout Weghorst.

A number of strikers have been linked with a switch to Old Trafford including Napoli sensation Victor Osimhen and Kane. It appears Erik ten Hag is prepared to make Kane his prime target with the club already putting plans in place ahead of a proposed swoop.

As per The Telegraph, the Red Devils plan to bid for the England captain and are currently conducting their due diligence over what price they might need to pay for his signature in order to prise him from Spurs. United are weighing up an approach so they can seal an early deal to bolster their frontline, but do not want to be dragged into a long-running saga.

The Red Devils are aware of how difficult it will be to open negotiations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. He is desperate not to lose Kane’s services but has been backed into a corner regarding the striker's future.

Kane has just over 12 months remaining on his contract, with this summer representing Spurs’ last chance to demand a considerable fee for him before they could potentially lose him for nothing next year. It is suggested that bids in the region of around £80m from overseas clubs might be enough to tempt Levy into selling, whilst offers of at least £100m will be demanded from clubs in the Premier League - and even that might not be enough.

Levy recently claimed that Kane can still win a trophy with Spurs amid growing interest in him from the Red Devils and German giants Bayern Munich. "He can absolutely win a trophy at Spurs," the Spurs chairman told the Cambridge Union. "But being a legend is also important.

"The fact that he’s top scorer of Tottenham Hotspur – he’s making history. I hope one day that there is a statue of Harry Kane outside our stadium."

Should United fail in their pursuit of Kane then they will look to alternative targets in the form of Osimhen or Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani. In the meantime, Kane is still in the middle of a brilliant personal campaign despite Spurs continuing to flounder in their attempts to finish in the top four.

He is only second behind Erling Haaland in the fight to win the Premier League golden boot with 24 goals to his name, with two further strikes coming in other competitions. Kane still managed to get on the scoresheet with a well-taken goal at the weekend despite Sunday's 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Newcastle.

With a decision to make over his future, it is suggested he would prefer to stay in England as he attempts to chase down Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League record.
